WHY READ DIVERSE BOOKS?
To find a book in which you see yourself reflected in its pages.
To read books about others who are different from you in order to increase your understanding and empathy.
THE CHALLENGE: read one book from eight of the eleven categories. Adoption and Foster Care Nature and Environmentalism Body Image Physical Disability Immigration Poverty and Homelessness Learning Challenges Race and Ethnicity LGBTQIA+ Youth Religion and Spirituality Mental Health
AFTER READING: Come to the library for a category card and fill it out. The card will ask you for your name, book title, author, and one reflection question. When it’s completed, turn the card in to Mrs. Hansen in the library.
PRIZES: After reading a book from one of the eleven categories and completing a category card, you will receive a mini button unique to that category. Your name will also be entered into a quarterly drawing for gift cards and other prizes for every book read from a different category.
GRAND PRIZE!!! If you complete the entire challenge by reading a book from eight different categories, you will receive a “RJH Challenge Accepted” T-shirt! HELP FINDING A BOOK: Mrs. Hansen has book lists in the library or on this website (lists are being reviewed and will be posted when completed) for each of the eleven categories.
The book does not have to come from these lists. Just make sure it fits one of the eleven categories. If you’re not sure, talk to a teacher or the librarian.
